Taken on August 28, 1998, this is the view from the old German positions at Serre, towards the British front line, directly in front of the trees. In 1916, when the Barnsley, Sheffield and Accrington men attacked there were four small copses, named Matthew, Mark, Luke and John. Matthew copse, to the far left, has been farmed over. The Walker brothers were positioned to the far right, at John copse. Fred and Ernest's bodies were never recovered and this is their final resting place. Their brother Charles does have a marked grave, at Euston Road Cemetery, nearby.
